We became the happy owners of a small farm in Tennessee in August 2010 with a few acres of land and a lot of dreams. The name Sugar Pea Farm was chosen as a rough translation of our Norwegian surname. Since 2010, dreams are slowly being realized - we've added a passel of chickens, more than a few cows, and two (more) dogs. Each year we've had a huge garden and I've learned to can all sorts of things - with the help of many of my husband's family recipes and the the online support of a great Facebook group on canning.
Our goal here at Sugar Pea Farm is to grow, raise, and otherwise develop the majority of our own food sources - just so that we know exactly what goes into the food we eat. We try to grow mostly heirloom varieties. As gardening skills have been honed, we've realized that we have more than enough for ourselves and our family, friends and neighbors. In fact, I suspect that some may run when they see us coming up with more okra, squash, tomatoes, peppers, eggs and other fresh garden delights!
Our cows are also a heritage breed - Dexters - which are a naturally small (not genetically miniaturized) breed. These suited our needs as a small family and are a good fit for me, a person with a healthy fear of large animals.
And so we learn, share our stories, recipes, and exploits in becoming self-reliant members of our society. Welcome to our journey!
